Abstract

Kerinci Oral Theater represents one of the oral traditions that offers a complex multimodal expression enriched with cultural and philosophical meanings. This form of oral performance embodies ethical teachings and spiritual values that emphasize harmony and social responsibility within the community. The study aims to analyze the multimodality of Oral Theater and identify its role as social capital that can be utilized to empower the local economy of Kerinci. The research employs a qualitative method with a multimodal approach, integrating critical discourse analysis with the ethnography of communication to understand the complexity of Oral Theater and its impact on the formation of social capital. In addition, the study adopts a creative economy perspective to explore opportunities for culture-based economic empowerment. The findings indicate that the multimodality of Oral Theater constitutes its unique appeal as the main cultural product, while the strong social capital within the community serves as the driving force that ensures collective and sustainable practices. By designing a model that integrates cultural strength (multimodality) with community strength (social capital), Kerinci Oral Theater holds significant potential to become the backbone of a sustainable creative economy that enhances community welfare without compromising cultural values and local wisdom.
