The Kasur Pasir tradition has been transmitted across generations within the community of Kampung Kasur Pasir, Legung Timur Village, Sumenep, Madura. In this context, the sand mattress functions as a domestic spatial medium that accommodates everyday activities, including sleeping, marital intimacy, and social interaction among family members and relatives. This study aims to examine how the kasur pasir is constituted as a Thirdspace through Edward Soja’s spatial trialectics, which conceptualizes space as an interrelation between material–physical space (Firstspace), representational space (Secondspace), and lived, socially imagined space (Thirdspace), thereby allowing the kasur pasir to be understood as a meaningful place rather than a merely functional space.Using a qualitative research approach, this study employs direct observation, in-depth interviews, digital documentation, and relevant literature review. The findings indicate that Thirdspace emerges as a hybrid spatial condition that provides both physical and emotional comfort for the residents, enabling sustained and intimate social interactions. Physical comfort is articulated at the level of Firstspace through the material and tactile qualities of the sand mattress, while psychological comfort is produced at the level of Secondspace through its role as a collective representation that embodies communal identity and shared cultural meanings.
